Members' Social Evening - The Many Faces of Africa
18th November 2014
Janet Parsons
The Capitol at Dougga
Join us for our annual members' social evening. We start with a photo quiz compiled by Harry and Jean Wickens on a theme of the ‘Many Faces of Africa’. We will then enjoy a BYO buffet and in the second half of the evening listen to a short travel talk given by our chairman Janet Parsons.
Janet visited Tunisia in the spring of this year travelling across the northern part of this diverse and beautiful country, fringed by the Mediterranean yet bordered by its African neighbours, Algeria and Libya.
We follow in the steps of the Romans and Carthaginians whose ancient sites lie in fields abundant with wildflowers. We see mosaics in the Bardo Museum in Tunis, one of the best collections of Roman mosaics in the world and explore the ruins of Dougga, perhaps the most magnificent Roman monument in Africa, before travelling south to the dramatic amphitheatre of El Djem.
En route we reflect on the 2011 uprisings in Tunisia which triggered the Arab Spring and see something of the local people before ending our journey at the Great Mosque in the Holy City of Kairouan, considered the fourth holiest site in Islam.
