China - Old and New
The old and the new buildings at Shanghai

Robert, a past Chairman of the Club, revisited China in September 2013. This talk will feature some of the well-known ancient sites of China, and also the rapid development of recent years.

With millions of people moving into the towns and cities from the countryside, new tower blocks are being built everywhere, and the skyline is dotted with cranes. However, amongst all this, can still be found evidence of China’s history. In Beijing, there are many great buildings dating back to the time of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. To the north of the city there are sections of the Great Wall.

This trip also included visits to Xian, to see the Terracotta warriors, and Chengdu’s Panda Breeding Research Station.

Moving back east to Shanghai, it is the 19th Century colonial architecture along the Bund which contrasts with the 20th and 21st development in the Pudong business district across the river.
