Guildford Travel Club Presents

In the Footsteps of Remarkable Women

17th January 2023

Annabel Abbs

The Speaker

From Texas and New Mexico to the furthest corners of Europe and Australia, join Annabel as she explains how the transformative power of walking affected the lives, writings and art of historical women.

Using images of her many adventures, following the paths taken by female trailblazers such as Nan Shepherd, Simone de Beauvoir and Frieda Lawrence, Annabel explains why and how being on foot historically changed these remarkable women and how it can change us too.  She shares locations and trails, as well as her experiences of following rivers and canals, climbing mountains, walking at night, with children, over plains and alone.

Annabel Abbs is the award-winning author of numerous books, including Windswept: Why Women Walk (voted a Travel Book of the Year 2021) and 52 Ways to Walk (as Annabel Streets). For the last decade she’s researched the intricate details of being on foot: what it does for our brain, body, mood and soul.
