Guildford Travel Club Presents

AGM & short talk Researching the Grey Wolves of Germany, followed by

Mongolia on Ice

18th April 2023

Matt Nixon

The Speaker

After a few life-changing moments and the will to have new experiences, Matt Nixon began to take on personal challenges that snowballed into a 100-mile ice skate down the legendary Lake Khovsgol in Outer Mongolia. Often known as the little sister to Russia’s Lake Baikal and affectionately known at Mongolia’s Blue Pearl, which gives Lake Khovsgol an almost friendly appeal, but in truth it couldn’t be much more remote and brutal.

Getting to the lake took nearly as long as the four-day crossing, but with the support of a fantastic local team combined with the strong spiritual undertone of the area, the skate provided Matt with a true other-worldly experience.

Join Matt, a (very) amateur adventurer and an average middle-aged guy, who tries to inspire others to try something different.

Prior to Matt's talk we will hold the AGM and a short talk from member Ben Rees. In July of 2022, Ben joined a volunteer project, researching the return of the grey wolf to Germany. The volunteers spent a week in Lower Saxony, a very rural part of Germany, hiking through pine forests and heathland in search of these elusive animals. Wolves have adapted to the presence of humans, but can humans adapt to the presence of the wolf?
