Guildford Travel Club Presents

A Journey into Muslim Europe

16th January 2024

Tharik Hussain

The Speaker

Muslim author and travel writer, Tharik Hussain, takes us on the journey that led to his award-winning book, “Minarets in the Mountains; a Journey into Muslim Europe”. Accompanied by his family, Tharik follows in the footsteps of medieval Ottoman traveller, Evliya Çelebi, through a region he calls ‘Muslim Europe’. Starting and ending in the ‘Jerusalem of Europe’, Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the journey takes us through Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro, revealing the six centuries of history and culture that belong to the continent’s largest community of indigenous Muslims, and asking the question: why is Europe so uncomfortable with its Islamic self?
