Members’ only evening with quiz, light bites and drinks. To be followed by a talk from Jan Parsons.

Jan’s quest began unexpectedly following a visit to a Roman villa in south-east England where the idea for the ‘Mosaic Trail’ was born.  This led to a journey to explore both Roman and Byzantine mosaics across Southern Europe, beginning in Tunisia, once a Roman province, and which has one of one of the largest collections of Roman mosaics in the world.

From here the trail crosses to the island of Sicily, then to mainland Greece where Jan explored its wonderful ancient sites and Roman mosaics. Travelling north through the beautiful country of Albania, there is little evidence of mosaics, however recent archaeological excavations have uncovered one notable exception.

Ultimately the trail zig-zags through Italy, where exciting discoveries await as so many sites and churches bear witness to its incredible artistic heritage.  The climax of the journey is indisputably Ravenna, the world capital of mosaics, now designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for their beauty and historical significance.
